Overwhelming Vote of 'No Confidence' in Interim President and Board of Trustees at Bates Tech College

Tacoma, WA – Faculty at Bates Technical College today announced a vote of “NO CONFIDENCE” in interim college president, Lyle Quasim, and the college board of trustees. More than 60 percent of the 179 faculty represented by the faculty union returned their ballots. Of those voting, 95 percent voted no confidence. Faculty will be presenting their vote of no confidence at the Board of Trustees’ meeting tomorrow, Tuesday, April 27, at 3 p.m. at their downtown campus, 1101 So. Yakima Ave., Tacoma 98405.

State Board Votes to Declare a Financial Emergency to
Expedite Faculty Dismissals at Community and Technical Colleges

In a controversial vote, the Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges (SBCTC) today declared a financial emergency over the protest of faculty leaders throughout the state. A law created in 1981, RCW 28B.50.873, allows presidents at community and technical colleges to expedite the termination of full-time, tenure-track and tenured faculty and modifies some reduction-in-force processes outlined in collective bargaining agreements. This law does not apply to four-year colleges and universities. [more]
